Drug Overdose Kills More Than Traffic Accidents

It’s official. Drug overdoses kill more Americans every year than traffic accidents. In his weekly address to the nation, President Obama asked Congress to pass a $1.1 billion in new funding to get addicts the treatment they need. Sadly only one in ten seek and benefit from treatment. President Obama was joined by Grammy Award-winning rapper Macklemore who has suffered with addiction for years. Macklemore said, “ I take this personally. I abused prescription drugs and I battled addiction. If I hadn’t gotten the help that I needed when I needed it, I definitely would not be here today. And I want to help others facing the same challenges I did.”

Drug overdose deaths have tripled since 2000.  Too often people become addicted after taking a prescription medication. Some call it “accidental addiction.” The President is calling for more education and resources for health care professionals who prescribe opioids. He also called for a plan to reach out to those who are suffering and get them the treatment they need and deserve. Obama said, “The first step is for all of us to start conversations about addiction and help remove the stigma.”
